The alarm goes off at 5 AM. I quietly roll out of bed while my husband remains asleep. It’s chilly and dark out, typical of a New England winter. I quickly put on my yoga clothes and make a cup of tea, careful not to wake anyone up. I take our new puppy for a quick walk and slip out the door for a 6 AM yoga class.

When I return home around 7:15 AM, my two young children are just waking up. They’re cheerful and ready to start their day. Despite the presence of these blessed beings with messy hair and cute pajamas, there’s tension in the house.

Things haven’t been going well in my marriage for some time, and I resent that my husband gets to stay home with our kids, but I need to prepare for a long day of work in the city.

I shower, grab some food, talk to my children, and tell them how much I’ll miss them before jumping in the car for my 75-minute commute to the office.

When I return home at 6, I’m tired and a little frazzled. It’s been a long day. Nevertheless, I rally and put on a happy face, glad to be back home with my babies. Dinner won’t be ready for a while because my husband doesn’t start cooking until I get home.
